Offered is a very fine and rare marked American coin silver napkin ring (virtually all are unmarked as to maker) dating to the 1840-65 timeframe and made by the well-known Philadelphia firm headed by Robert & William Wilson. Despite the Wilsons' successful career and large number of flatware and hollowware items extant, this is only the second time I have come across napkin rings made by this firm. This napkin ring is engraved in a basket-weave pattern with a period script monogram within a scroll-shaped reserve, and the maker's mark is on the inside rim. Also on the inside rim (see all pictures by clicking on the first picture) is a tiny notch where someone did a silver test - this does not adversely affect the integrity of the piece. This piece measures about 2 inches across by about 1 1/4 inches high, and weighs about 23 grams. Aside from the little notch from the silver test, this piece is in very good antique condition, and looks like it wasn't used except on rare occasions. It is free of dents, splits or repairs. All in all an exceptionally nice example of this form in American coin silver!
