Offered is a lovely and very early European or colonial (e.g., Dutch New York) silver dognose tablespoon circa 1700-20, or perhaps a few years earlier or later. This piece measures about 7 7/8 inches in length and weighs about 30 grams. It is prick-engraved with a period set of owner's initials, and is marked with a poorly struck or rubbed mark on the handle near the bowl. Please scroll through the pics. There appears to be only the single mark, pointing to a potential colonial origin, although European spoons of this era sometimes also had only a maker's mark. The engraved floral decoration to the reverse of the bowl would seem to point to a Dutch or Dutch colonial origin, or Scandinavian such as Danish. The prick-engraving of the monogram would seem to make this more likely. In any event, perhaps the piece can be further identified. It is certainly an attractive and period spoon, dating back three centuries. Condition is excellent overall for a piece of this age, with modest surface and tip wear and a few light scratches and small dings, but with no major dents and no detectable splits or repairs. All in all a gorgeous early piece of antique silver!
