Offered is one of the best pairs of American coin silver sugar tongs I've had the fortune to come across, bearing a very scarce mark. This exquisite piece was made the short-lived partnership of John Folsom and Isaac Hutton, working in Albany, New York circa 1787 to 1790. The decoration and period engraved monogram on this piece is top-notch, and the form of this pair of sugar tongs is an interesting transition between earlier pierced cast-arm sugar tongs and the single-piece sugar tongs of the 1790s. This piece still features cast arms (see pics - the inside of the arms shows the faint lines where the arms are joined to the bow), but the arms are solid rather than pierced. This piece is an important link in the development of the form. The maker's mark on this pair of tongs is clear and well-struck (see pics). This piece measures about 5 5/8 inches in length and weighs about 40 grams. Condition is excellent, with minimal surface wear and no dents, splits or repairs. Note that the lines inside the arms are normal joins and not repairs. All in all an extraordinary example of late 18th Century American silver!
