Providence, RI Coin Silver Dessert Spoon by Gorham & Co., Variant Mark
$22.50
Offered is an interesting coin silver dessert spoon made circa 1850s by Gorham & Co. (John Gorham, Gorham Thurber and Lewis Dexter), in business in Providence, Rhode Island between 1852 and 1875. This framed mark with scalloped corners is most common in Providence silver of the 1840s and 50s, and multiple silversmiths and firms seem to have called upon the same die cutter. The framed mark for Gorham & Co. seems to be a fairly uncommon variant, perhaps used only for the first few years of the partnership. This dessert spoon has a legible maker's mark, and a location mark of "ProvidenceRI", as well as a journeyman's mark of a star that I've not previously observed on other Gorham silver. This spoon is also engraved in period script for the original owner. See all pictures. This piece measures about seven inches in length and weighs about 18 grams. Condition is fairly good overall, with a shallow bump in the bowl but little overall wear and no splits or repairs. All in all a nice example of this particular maker's mark used by this firm!
