SOLD

Offered is a rare example of West Virginia coin silver spoons bearing the mark of John William Mather, jeweler of Parkersburg (fl. 1868-75). The marks on these tablespoons are very interesting - instead of a COIN mark for fineness, there is a mark of SILVER, and the maker's mark/retailer's mark of Mather is quite nice, with JOHN W.MATHER in a banner over PARKERSBURG.W.VA in a shaped punch, flanked by a star. The marks on these spoons are clear and well-struck, and each table spoon also has a period engraved script monogram. These pieces measure a little under 8 inches in length, and the pair weighs a total of about 82 grams. Condition is very good overall, with some surface wear from normal use, but no dents, splits or repairs. Please review all of the photos. All in all an excellent example of a rare set of marks and of West Virginia coin silver!

Available singly for $65 or the pair for $100.
