Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Fine Portland, Maine Coin Silver Beaker Circa 1812 by Charles Farley
SOLD
Offered is a fantastic piece of early Maine silver, by noted silversmith Charles Farley (born 1791 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, died 1877 in Portland, Maine), and bearing a good clear strike of his maker's mark to the base.
This beaker is engraved EWC in period script, and the engraving shows little wear. This piece measures about 3 3/8 inches high, and weighs a substantial 163 grams. Condition overall is excellent, with the usual small shallow dings but no splits or repairs. There are some stubborn tarnish spots, which do come off with some elbow grease - this piece very tarnished when found, having been left untouched for a long period of time. Please review all of the pictures. The rim is very slightly out of round, but the surface and shape look much better in person than pictures can express!
This beaker should date by style to the first years of Farley's career, and is among the earliest of Maine coin silver hollowware. All in all a fine piece for display or for use as a julep cup!
