Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Good American Coin Silver Spoon by Daniel Dupuy, Sr. c. 1745-70
SOLD
Offered is a beautiful fancy-back mid-18th Century coin silver spoon marked "DD" twice - it appears to be a mark for Daniel Dupuy Sr. that didn't get included in Catherine Hollan's "Philadelphia Silversmiths". However, spoons with this mark are documented in Belden (mark a.) and in the Winterthur collection online (e.g., http://museumcollection.winterthur.org/single-record.php?resultsperpage=20&view=catalog&srchtype=advanced&hasImage=&ObjObjectName=&CreOrigin=&Earliest=&Latest=&CreCreatorLocal_tab=&materialsearch=&ObjObjectID=&ObjCategory=&DesMaterial_tab=&DesTechnique_tab=&AccCreditLineLocal=&CreMarkSignature=&recid=1962.0240.137&srchfld=&srchtxt=Dupuy&id=7c8e&rownum=1&version=100&src=results-imagelink-only)
This spoon has a pronounced midrib to the front, and on the back there is an engraved period block letter monogram of "AB". The maker's mark is nicely struck in both cases, and the beautiful heel and shell decoration is also nicely preserved. This spoon measures about 4 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 7 grams. Condition overall is excellent considering the age, with only modest wear and no dents, splits or repairs. All in all a superb example of mid-18th Century early American silver!
