Black Rhinestone Brooch and Earring Set
This is a somewhat unusual piece. Black Rhinestones are set through the Japanned lattice interlaced with flowers and the larger stones being the buds. The earring are of the same motif but are circular instead of the helical/seashell shape of the brooch. I remember my grandmother wearing this piece usually with a scarf but sometimes on her coat. She wore them often. This set has some wear. All of the stones are intact on the pin, however there is a stone missing from each of the clip-on earrings and some of the enamel has worn off of them as well. They appear to be dainty but in fact are quite well made. The brooch has 3 - 5/16" (0.8cm) diameter stones non-prong set in apparently petal frames, and 36 - 3/16" (0.6cm) diameter non-prong set stones around edge, and 12 - 3/16" (0.06cm) diameter non-prong set in the middle of the piece. The earrings have 1 - 5/16" (0.8cm) diameter stone non-prong set in middle petal frame and 10 - 3/16" (0.6cm) diameter surrounding the central stone in a somewhat helical lattice work. The brooch is 2 1/4" (5.7cm) tall, 1 15/16" (4.9cm) wide, and is 9/16" (1.4cm) thick; it weighs 1.0oz (28gr). The earrings are 1 1/16" (2.7cm) diameter, 3/8" (1.1cm) thick, and weigh 0.4oz (10gr) each. This set is vintage and it has been worn (apparently it was quite well liked since she wore it often). As I stated, since my grandmother wore these when I was a child, I have to assume that she had them for a while before me. So I have estimated that this set is at least from the 50's but probably earlier than that. I have discounted this set quite a bit due to the wear.
