Bored and in need of a new game? How about one that doesn't require a computer or, for that matter, electricity? Measuring 4 3/8 by 1 1/8 by 1 3/8 inches, this set will fit easily into your purse or briefcase, but at 31 oz. Troy (that's two pounds, two ounces in lay terms) it may weigh you down a bit. The case has some minor dents, as one might expect, from its occupants which are small and dense. There is also a spot on the "M" where the engraver bore down too hard and went through the cover...

One is just cause to raise the flag, but a pair? Splendid! These are oval, 2 1/8" X 1 3/8", and stand 1 3/4" off the table. Unmarked, but attributed by a VERY knowledgeable fellow to F.A. Durgin of St. Louis. I tried to put both in the same frame but couldn't get sufficient detail, thus the two similar looking enlargements. each square face 15 X 15 millimeters, or if you'd prefer 9/16 X 9/16 inches, weight .46 oz. Troy or 14.3 grams or if you're old school 9.2 dwt. Marked on reverse 18k and L in diamond as shown in second enlargement.

These are quite stylish and in wonderful condition. The posts are marked only 14k, which I suppose means they'd run out of 18k backs on the day that they were assembled, and made due with what was on hand.

A lovely complement to any "Berry in Calyx" holloware, this fine piece by craftsman Charles W Blanchard is not a commonly encountered pattern.

Chickering shows a fish knife in a similar pattern with notes that Stone was heavily influenced by Dresser's "The Art of Decorative Design (pl. XXVI)", which we have reproduced here in enlargement number five.

This pattern is among Stone's finest designs. A nearly identical though not quite so desirable piece is held by Yale University Art Gallery, see Chickering p. 147, plate 134. Similar examples may also be seen in the collection of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.

There is a small divot along the rim which we've magnified twenty-fold so that it looks like a crater, but this is barely visible to the naked eye. There are also some salt spots on the interior, (see fifth photo) but the chasing is crisp and the overall condition is truly outstanding.

What sets this item apart from other examples which have recently been on the market is, simply stated, condition. Not only are the floral decorations crisp and untouched by polishing wear, but their gentle background of chasing marks remains (see third photo), creating an effect of kumatage, as if the decorations were suspended in a pool of rippling water.

Olive pattern, circa 1870, the blade well engraved with three frolicking fishes, knife 11 7/8, fork 9 3/8 inches, fine condition, monogrammed "Lockwood", weight 8.2 Troy ounces.

Ball Black & Company's items made in this higher silver standard tend to be heavy and of fine quality. They may have been intended for export to the French market, where .950 was de rigueur.
