Most every culture has a version of, well, corn meal mush. In Italy, it's polenta. Among the Native American tribes of Florida, sofkee would be the name, and this spoon designed by Greenleaf and Crosby circa 1900 is supposedly a scale model of such a porridge-making utensil. Hughes, NY circa 1840, length 4 1/8 inches, monogrammed obverse in period script, a nearly imperceptible test mark at leading edge of bowl but otherwise superb condition, weight .51 oz Troy. An exemplary item.

Should you have the good fortune to be reading our web page sequentially, here are two twisted bits of silver in honor of April Fool's Day. These were made in different fashions by individual craftsmen operating a machine which could rotate their working stock in alternating directions, causing a "trompe l'oeil" effect. Length 5 7/8 inches, weight .70 oz. Troy, no monogram, some knife cuts on reverse of tines but otherwise in fine condition. Place pieces in this pattern are scarce.

height 9; diameter 5 7/8 inches, soft dark patina in fine condition save for a splotch of green paint as shown in second enlargement, marked only "H2" on glass globe, will probably need to be re-wired. As with all of our offerings (excepting item 1928), this is a period piece, not a reproduction.

lacking a catalog, we can't say for sure that it's Old English but with scrolled border and trailing floral appliqués the resemblance is quite strong, diameter 2 inches, height 1 3/4, weight a hefty 1.95 Troy ounces, some very light scratches as shown in enlargement number three but fine overall condition.
