excellent condition, monogrammed "W" (see second photo), length 5 3/8 inches, weight 6.21 Troy ounces. These have an embossed decoration on the bowl which we suspect that later versions of this piece do not possess.

Gale & Mosely, New York circa 1830, double struck-- for the uninitiated, this means the pattern is both front and back, length just shy of 8 1/2 inches, some very slight tine wear on a few (we've pictured the worst one in enlargement number four) but superb overall condition, weight 30.74 Troy ounces (!!) or 2.79 each on average, no monogram.

One would be hard-pressed indeed to find a better set of dinner forks.

bowls, marked only "sterling" and "J.E.Caldwell & Co." To say that these are "highly carved" would be an understatement, and though about a hundred years old they are in essentially new condition. Length five inches, no monogram.

length 5 1/2 inches, discretely monogrammed "S" as shown, most of the original gilding remains on tines, total Troy weight 6.84 ounces, excellent overall condition.

Frequent guests of our little website will know that I'm fond of gushing about what an exceptional job the Durgin Corporation did in recreating New Hampshire's natural flora with solid silver. These Cat Tails, with their "fuzzy" flower heads, are perhaps the prime example of that work...

Philadelphia circa 1790, a fine, large and massive piece, length 14 inches, length of bowl five inches, weight 6.87 Troy ounces, marked JA struck twice in cut cornered rectangle. There is a minor fill at the edge of the bowl (please see fifth photo) and some scratches on reverse, but excellent overall condition.

This spoon is not monogrammed and does not appear ever to have been, which is most unusual for early American silver.

dessert spoons, Paris circa 1780, .950 standard, maker's mark LTA (please see fifth photo), total Troy weight 20.75 ounces, some light wear but fine overall condition, with crest as shown though one spoon also has a period script "S" monogram. The forks measure 20.5 and the spoons 19.5 centimetres.

French silver from this period is quite scarce. Price is for the total of eight pieces.

Baltimore MD circa 1790, round downturned end with just a hint of a rear midrib extending 3 inches down the handle, unusual double arched drop, length 8 3/4 inches, some tip wear as shown but good overall condition, monogrammed "H" in period script. How certain are we of this attribution? Well, if it's American then the spoon is most certainly Dowig...

length six inches, some very light scratches on tines as shown but fine overall condition, weight 1.0 oz Troy each, monogrammed "S" (script, obverse), please see fourth enlargement for marks.

length 8 7/8 inches, one has a stainless blade which sadly has been set in with lead solder (the handle rattles a bit; there's a minor dent), the other an original blunt s/p blade, monogrammed "BHS".

length 7 1/8 inches, no monogram, excellent original condition, total Troy weight 4.5 ounces.

George Blanchard left the employ of Arthur Stone in 1909 to start his own silversmithy. He was awarded "Master" status by the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts, and these spoons exemplify the exceptional quality of his work.

length 4 3/4 inches, weight 1.38 Troy ounces, excellent condition, softly gilt tines, monogrammed as shown. Price is for the lot.

length 6 3/4+ inches, total Troy weight 5.83 ounces, no monogram, stunning original condition, marked as shown in fourth enlargement.

length 6 7/8 inches, monogram "F", excellent condition, weight 9 oz. Troy, marked with Alvin trademark; "Sterling" and "Patent".

These are find, old pieces with excellent detail and die depth.

length 6 1/8 inches, total Troy weight 5.53 ounces, lightly monogrammed "D", fine condition.

length just shy of 5 1/8 inches, total Troy weight 2.15 ounces (heavy for berry forks @.36 each), marked as shown in third enlargement.

Though the three letter script monogram may not be traditional for Fairfax, these are nearly impossible to find.

length 6 7/8 inches (!!), total Troy weight 4.9 oz., excellent condition, monogrammed as shown and dated "1889" on reverse.

Of all the nineteenth century American flatware manufacturers, we have a particular fondness for Durgin. Their sensitivity to the natural world and ability to evoke it "in the metal" was uncanny...

length 5 3/8 inches, total Troy weight 3.91 ounces, astonishing original condition, no monogram, gilt bowls.

This pattern gets much less love than its close relatives Iris and New Art, but is every bit as finely detailed and well executed as either one of those.

These are benchmark examples, looking today just as they did upon leaving the factory on Elmwood Avenue some hundred and fifty years ago. They are engraved (slightly differently) in an exceptionally well designed and well executed manner upon all three sides...
