height 2 1/4; diameter of base 2 3/16 inches, weight 3.05 Troy ounces, base shows some evidence of a candle having been pushed down too hard (see third enlargement) but we may say that it's in fine condition when viewed from above!

diameter 9 1/2 inches, weight 26.2 Troy ounces, craftsman [probably] David Carlson. There is a small divot along the rim which we've magnified twenty-fold so that it looks like a crater, but this is barely visible to the naked eye. There are also some salt spots on the interior, (see fifth photo) but the chasing is crisp and the overall condition is truly outstanding.

This is one of Stone's best designs, with similar examples held at Yale University Art Gallery and other major museums...

circa 1900, length 10.6, height 7.5 centimeters, mass 162.7 grams, .950 standard. If you're a Brit, that's 4 inches long; 3 1/4 inches high; 5.23 Troy ounces.

We're not going to prattle on about how rare it is or how good it is, but you may rest assured that it's both. Aside from a small test mark on the underside (please see fourth photo) the condition is pretty much flawless.

London 1929, comprising two pepper castors, two open salts and mustard pot (with cobalt liner), weighable silver 32 Troy ounces, excellent condition, no monogram. This set is of the finest quality. Nothing which you may purchase "new and off the shelf" will match it.

height 9 1/8 inches to top of spout, weight 39 Troy ounces, no monogram, a few minor dents around the waist which won't show in a photo but fine overall condition, vintage CC (Calvin Coolidge, circa 1925).

With its gadrooned border and luxuriously chased acanthus leaf thumb rest, this is a refined, well constructed and massive piece of early 20th century Boston silver. Please see fourth enlargement for marks...

height 7 7/8 inches, length 10 inches across the bobeches, diameter of base 4 inches, weight approximately 38.5 Troy ounces, no monogram, excellent condition.

Little is known about La Paglia himself, though Dorothy Rainwater relates (see Silver Magazine, May/June 1995, item pictured in article) that he worked as a spy during WWII, and was smuggled into and out of Italy on board a submarine...

Boston circa 1900, richly decorated with Rococo revival ornamentation, crested but otherwise not monogrammed, height 12 1/4 inches, weight 14.58 Troy ounces, some polishing wear to high points but fine overall condition, marked as shown in fifth enlargement.

While quite common in the world of Continental silver, these are exceptionally scarce in Victorian era Americana.

maker's mark "OL" height just shy of 3 1/2; top diameter 2 3/4 inches, monogrammed "AAH" (script) in oval cartouche with fancy scrolled floral engraved border, weight 2.23 oz. Troy, faintly gilt interior, a few dents in base as shown (please see photo number three) but very good overall condition.

What more may we say about this beaker? It won't break if you drop it and thus is well suited for bathroom or bar room...

length across handles twelve inches, width six inches, height six inches, weight 27.13 Troy ounces, fine condition, monogrammed as shown.

Whiting could easily have incorporated the rocaille design into the dies which were used to strike the body of this piece. Instead, they chose to use applied decoration along the foot and below the lid, a more difficult and costly technique. The resulting three-dimensionality lifts this tureen out of the realm of "good" and into that of "exceptional".

height 1 3/4; diameter of base 2 1/4 inches, weight 3.28 Troy ounces, excellent condition, discreetly monogrammed on the underside as shown in photos three and four.

These are perfectly plumb, but wide angle distortion has caused one to look a bit akilter, and for this we must apologize, dear reader.

craftsman Herman Glendenning, height 5 1/2 inches, total Troy weight 13.25 ounces, no monogram, some minor dents in base as shown in third and fourth enlargements but very good overall condition.

These have probably "been to the wheel" sometime during their career, and it pains me to see Mr. Stone's work treated in such a manner. We must asume that our readers will agree, or else they'd be looking at Replacements, not here...

Boston circa 1926, with applied molded rim and gently slanting sides, height 3 1/2; top diameter 4 inches, weight 6.6 Troy ounces, no monogram, fine condition.

Also known as a mint julep cup, this form is not common among early 20th century hand wrought items made here in the U.S.

Gardner, MA circa 1921, Craftsman Arthur Hartwell, length 7 3/4 inches across the handle, weight 9.51 Troy ounces, some scratches as shown in fourth enlargement but very good overall condition.

Let's answer the most obvious question first: Is this the same family whose name graces a certain ravine in New Hampshire's White Mountains which is beloved by back country skiers in search of an adrenaline rush? Yes indeed it is...

order numbers 170 (datemark for 1900) and S2902 (datemark obscured), height 3 3/4 inches, weight 4.42 oz. Troy, no monogram, a few very minor dents here and there but excellent overall condition.

Allow me to begin by saying all the things it's not: 1) Ashbee 2) Knox 3) Liberty 4) perfect.

And now, let's move along to cheerier thoughts...

with embossed Biblical scene of Abraham preparing to sacrifice Isaac, complete with the Angel of the Lord imploring him “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God...", height five; diameter 2.5 inches, weight 2.49 Troy ounces, Hebrew description of the scene as shown in third enlargement (the first word is "Avraham," and you're on your own for the rest)...

height 2; diameter 6 1/2 inches, weight 7.31 troy ounces, no monogram, some light scratches at bottom as shown but fine overall condition, see third enlargement for mark.

In the Boston School of early 20th century Art & Crafts silver, it is much more common to see this type of "lotus" bowl in copper than in silver. We are pleased to provide this scarce example.

height 7 3/8 inches, 3 1/4 inches across base, weight 11.75 Troy ounces, no monogram. Please note that these are not weighted.

There are some condition issues. One (on left in photo) has some dents in the side panels; the bobeche on the other is a bit wavy. Also, though they bear the same model number, one is decorated with beading and the other with "rope."

Keep in mind that when your table is lit with candle light, the guests will simply say "what lovely pair of candlesticks!"
