bowls, marked only "sterling" and "J.E.Caldwell & Co." To say that these are "highly carved" would be an understatement, and though about a hundred years old they are in essentially new condition. Length five inches, no monogram.

T. Kirkpatrick, New York circa 1870, just shy of 12 inches long, mono removal to one cartouche (please see third photo) but otherwise in fine condition. Is the antique business so slow that Cherner is considering hari-kari with a silver skewer, or is he just anticipating the start of barbecue season? You be the judge, dear reader...

Some might hold out for pie in the sky when they die, others would prefer to eat it now. We won't confess to endorsing either preference but will provide the right utensil for those who fall into category number two. Just shy of 7 1/4 inches long, excellent condition, monogrammed "LRM" (script, obverse, see third photo).

There is a minor flake in the enamel (see third photo) which doesn't extend through to the metal, and some scuffing around the edges on reverse but aside from this the condition is superb. Those of us who've had a chance to stroll across the river Charles and visit the "Silver and Shawls: India, Europe, and the Colonial Art Market" at Harvard's Sackler Museum are no doubt all steamed up about anglo-Indian silver, and want a little example for the collection. Stop here. This is a great one. Length just shy of 5 inches; width 1 1/8; decagonal in section; nearly flawless condition (lid over stoppered end does not hold tightly-- see third photo). You'll forgive me for thinking of Vermont as a place where they make the butter, not one where they made utensils to spread it. Be that as it may, here's a fine little implement by Roswell H. Bailey of Woodstock, circa 1840, length 7+ inches, excellent condition, monogrammed "C.P.D." in period script.
