circa 1860; length 3 1/4, width 2 1/2 inches; excellent condition; now set up as a pin (see third photo). While we don't usually favor altered goods, a belt buckle which would have originally been knotted with a thin silk band is of limited use, but a pin will sit quite happily upon your sweater.

Let's stop right there. I don't for a moment believe that this item was made in Boston. Most everything about it: the floral four toed feet, chased foliage with "ring matted" background (see Forbes, plate 41), silversmith's center punch on the top (see fourth photo), the overall heft and construction suggest that it was made in Canton province. Kheechong, Canton circa 1825, length 13 1/2 inches, monogrammed "DR". Heavy and in excellent condition, with the classic "inset v" construction on both shells (front & back), bold shell drop (please see third photo). A superb example from the China Trade period, there is but one caveat here: someone has substantially removed the mark (ideogram - K.H.C. - monarch), so that it is just barely visible.
