Cheshire, Connecticut circa 1750, length 8 inches, weight 1.5 oz. Troy, monogrammed "P over M.T" in well-engraved shaded block period lettering, slight tip wear but fine overall condition.

Though his working dates are commonly given as 1757-1788, Hitchcock was born in 1726 and would have typically completed his apprenticeship by 1744. This spoon, with its short front mid rib and elongated rat tail trailing out below a round drop is a close match for those in YUAG's collection (see Buhler & Hood, p. 245) Empirical evidence would suggest that he was an accomplished silversmith several years earlier than 1757.

Known primarily as a spoonmaker, Hitchcock was also a community leader and Revolutionary soldier. He served as Sergeant in the Governor's Foot Guard was in fact a charter member of that organization (see footguard.org). Here's a chance to augment your collection with a choice little gem of Americana.
