Readers of our little web page know that there's not much coin silver flatware here-- that is, pieces made between 1825 and 1868 in the good old U.S. of A. Why? Because most of it was thin, mass produced, and of inferior quality. Indeed, the majority of what we now see was made in New York, Boston or Philly and simply stamped with local marks.

But then again there are items such as this spoon by Joab Gillett of Cazenovia, a man who did actually work as a silversmith, which prove to be the exception. The relatively short fiddle handle and long, gradual curve descending toward sugarloaf shoulders are typical of Utica area silverware. Finally, though, an object can evoke for the collector a sense of place, and for me that would mean coming down those Seven Stone Steps at the end of a long day's work, a tall glass of beer just within my grasp...
