I believe it's woven sweetgrass.
The tag that came with the basket states the origin of the basket to be from Maine by the Micmac or other tribe (cant make out the name).
Similar looking basket online was made from the Wanabaki or Penobscot tribe.
Some color fading to the basket otherwise great condition.
Possibly a sewing basket.
There is a silver painted number on the bottom of the basket.
