Item #CA298

Striking Wood Okimono of a Water buffalo w/children riding on it's back.
It is approx 13" in length, 5" in width and 6" tall.
The reddish wood is intricately carved from top to bottom.
This piece depicts 2 children riding atop a lying water buffalo that is starting to take off. One child has a hold of the rope that extends out from both nostrils of the buffalo. The buffalo is licking his lips.
The eye's and teeth of the water buffalo and children are inlayed, not sure what material was used for the inlaying.
There is an area on the back of the buffalo where the wood has cracked open a little bit and there are areas where the wood has hairline cracks, probably from age. There is a slit on the neck of the buffalo which can only be seen if turned over.
The right leg and right ear of the buffalo have been repaired, it looks like they were completely broke off at one time and the right hoof has a chip on it.
The teeth on one of the children is missing, overall a striking very detailed work of art.
I believe this was made in the late 18th-early 19th Century.
Unsigned.
