Fossilized Trilobite In Natural Matrix
Fossilized trilobite (Phacops rana) in natural matrix. It is fairly large in size (up to 6 inches long). It protected itself by rolling up into a ball much like a pill bug in order to protect itself from predators. Its exoskeleton was on the outside. The most striking feature is its large eyes located on turret-like structures able to rotate 360’. Age: 400 million years old (Devonian Era). Location: King George County, Virginia. Overall measurement: 5 inches tall by 4 inches wide by 4 inches thick. In this example the trilobite is elongated with head at bottom and tail curled under at top.
