Leaf repousse, applied top and bottom decorative bands. Marked PURE SILLLVER COIN and pseudohallmarks of Tifft & Whiting. The inscription in a reserve on the front says: "Presented/to/John L.Cook/as a token of/respect by the operatives in/the Carding Room of the/P.S.Factory/Portsmouth NH./Sept.15,1853". The Portsmouth city directory for 1851 lists John L. Cook as overseer in the Portsmouth Steam Factory (they made yarn). Height of handle 4-1/2"; of lip 4-1/4". Diameter of mouth 3";of base 2-3/8". Weight 3-2/3 troy ounces. Overall and mark condition are excellent.
