Pennsylvania sgraffito mug

Sgraffito mug from Lydia's Pennsylvania German Pottery, 4 in. height, recent production. Mug is decorated with folk art birds and flowers, and bears the inscription: 'My mug is filled with joy, my joy is all.' Very good condition.

Sgraffito is a method of pottery decoration that carves or cuts a design into a slip-covered surface, revealing the constrasting underbody color. This type of ware was produced by German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.
