Dianthus (vase with flowers) is a still life which was created by Elyse Ashe Lord around 1920. Lord (1900-1971) was often characterized as a British Orientalist, as she specialized in far eastern subjects. This bizarre yet amazing creature is a "Rumph" creation. Very little is known (or published) about "Rumph" creations, and even less about the artist. James Calhoun Rumph was born in 1942 in Missouri. His career was tragically cut short when in 1993 he was struck by a motor vehicle on the streets of Los Angeles California. He died 5 days later. This is an original oil painting by Karl Kappes. Kappes (1861-1943)is best known for his work as the art director for the Weller Pottery Company in Zanesville Ohio from 1904-1920.
