Item #217

This is an original oil painting by Karl Kappes. Kappes (1861-1943)is best known for his work as the art director for the Weller Pottery Company in Zanesville Ohio from 1904-1920. However, he was also an accomplished painter of portraits and landscapes, and is best known for his impressionist paintings. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Munich Royal Academy. Before his death in 1943, Karl Kappes was fond of saying: "The Chinese have a saying that no man is an artist until he has painted 10,000 pictures. I am an artist." This painting measures 16" by 20". It is on fiberboard. I'm not sure of the title of this work. On the back, it is hand written "Afternoon Sunlight" in one location, "On the Road to Texas, Ohio" in another, and "Road to Texas" in a third location. Any of the titles could fit the painting. It depicts a crimson red barn surrounded by trees on a deserted road somewhere in the country. While it is not signed on the front (as is the case with many of Mr Kappes's works), it is stamped "Estate of Karl Kappes, 1861-1943) on the back. To my knowledge, the gold frame is original to the piece. The painting is in excellent condition with no damage of any kind. The frame has a coupe of nicks and may have been repainted at some point.
