This beautiful serving piece was manufactured by Spode. The pattern is called "Chelsea Bird" and is red in color. It is characterized by the official spode website as a "dishevelled bird standing on a rock". Chelsea Bird was apparently produced from 1884-1972 under a variety of names and pattern numbers. Some of the names include: Blackbird, Pink Bird and Rock Bird. The different versions of the pattern had different pattern numbers often indicating a different shape (blank) or a different finish. See photos for the marks and numbers included on this piece. This serving bowl is nearly rectangular in shape, with the center of the longer edge curving slightly in at the middle. There is a scalloped handle at each end. The outside of the piece is all plain. There are 4 birds on the inside of the bowl. Each handle is comprised of flowers, fruit and leaves. It measures 12" (across the handles) by 7.625" (at the widest) and is 2.25" deep. It is in very good condition. There appears to be one glaze pop on the edge, and a missed glaze area on the tail of the large bird. I can find no other damage of any kind. The colors are very well preserved. See our home page for other Spode Chelsea Bird pieces.
