The top of the ad reads, "Der Gabelschwanz Teufel" which means "Fork-tailed devil" – or Lockheed P-38 Lightning. German pilots who had been lucky enough to escape its wrath named the plane...

This is a nice vintage advertisement dated April, 1945, for Boeing – designers of the B-29 Superfortress, the Flying Fortress and the new Stratocruiser. The ad shows a picture of the C-97 Army transport which had an average speed of 383 miles an hour with tail winds averaging approximately 45 mph.

World War II was still raging when this advertisement was printed...
