This issue is full of articles, photographs and advertisements to take us all back to simpler times!
It's great to look at the advertisements in these old magazines! Being an ex-telephone company employee, I especially enjoyed the full page color advertisement for Bell Telephone Systems showing three of the latest telephones of the day - all dial phones, of course. My favorite - the Princess phone!
Another real nostalgia jolt is the advertisement for RCA Victor for a color TV. Of course, most homes in 1963 did not own a color TV. The bottom of the ad reads, "More people own RCA Victor TV than any other kind - black and white or color." Hard to believe we were happy just to HAVE a black and white TV. In West Texas where I was raised, we had only two stations, yet we could always find something to watch - well until the network signed off around midnight. Not so now with the 150+ stations I receive for big bucks - not free like back in 1963!
The upper 1/3 of one page is advertising the movie Mutiny On The Bounty with Marlon Brando. Has it been that long ago?
For anyone interested in old ships, then this is the National Geographic issue to have. The article is titled Ships Through The Ages: A Saga Of The Sea. What makes this such a wonderful piece is the many, many color paintings and pictures of ships (and boats) over the ages! One page describes the development of the anchor and rudder with drawings. Another page shows drawings of Merchant profiles from 1819 to 1962. This article has it all - from a bamboo basket boat in South Vietnam to the 1,035 foot France on her maiden voyage on February 8, 1962. Fifty one single sided pages on this article alone!
If Sweden is your love - then the article titled Sweden, Quiet Workshop Of The World is in the issue for you. It has 40 great pages of the people and places of Sweden!
The piece on Miniature Monaco is complete with a picture of Prince Rainier and Princess Grace on a yacht especially for the National Geographic photographer.
Other articles included:
New Map Reflects Progress In Viking Land Niagara Falls, Servant of Good Neighbors Mystery of the Monarch Butterfly The magazine is in very good condition with slight wear.
