Councils Degree of Pocahontas - Order of Red Men

Councils Degree of Pocahontas - Order of Red Men
SOLD - 4/09
Item #Book390

This is a very interesting book titled "Opening, Closing And Adoption Odes of Councils Degree of Pocahontas – Improved Order of Red Men." It was published under the auspices of the Great Council of the United States. It is dated October 15, 1950.

The Degree of Pocahontas is the woman’s affiliate of The Improved Order of Red Men. The organization named itself after the Native American princess who befriended the English settlers of Jamestown. It was established in 1885. The Auxiliary patterns itself after the princess Pocahontas – the virtues of teaching kindness, love, charity, and loyalty to one’s nation.

The fraternal group known as The Red Men can trace its beginning back to 1765. They were originally known as the Sons of Liberty. Concealing their identities, these men worked "underground" to establish freedom and liberty in the early Colonies. After 1812, the group changed its name to the Society of Red Men – then later to the Improved Order of Red Men. The organization has kept the customs and terminology of Native Americans as part of the fraternity. It is a non-profit organization and is Chartered by Congress.

The National Museum of The Improved Order of Red Men Fraternal Organization is located in Waco, Texas.

This book is actually a song book for the Degree of Pocahontas. It includes the Opening Ode, Adoption Ode, Ode – Wandering Down, Closing Ode, Funeral Dirge, and Ode – Come, Ye Disconsolate.

Inside the book was a sheet torn from an old song book with the songs "Old-Time Power" and "I Am Longing to Know More of Jesus." I am including it with the book.

The book is in good overall condition. The outer cover has some ink markings on the front cover and a stain on the lower left corner. There is some minor wear to the edges and corners. The first inside page is blank and had a number written on it. It has been erased, however, you can still see the image. The interior pages are very clean – no writing or dog-ear. The book measures approximately 5 1/2x8" in size and has 14 pages.

This would be a wonderful piece of memorabilia for someone belonging to this group!

Please include $2.00 for shipping in the U.S. Add an additional $1.65 if you would like the shipment insured.
