This large ladle, well wrought by the most prominent silversmith of Reading, Pennslvania, is at first sight startling in its elegance. The long neck and thin fiddle terminal, graced by a finely engraved script monogram, make it an exceptional piece for the period when forms often were clumsy. The overall balance of design is remarkable. It dates to about 1820. Mannerback, who was born on August 4, 1762, learned the jewelry trade which he carried on for more than 50 years...
