$350 SOLD

One of the most desirable New York Federal silversmiths, Daniel Van Voorhis, made these tablespoons circa 1785. They have dragon head crests (crests are fairly rare on American silver) and the best Van Voorhis hallmark (initials with full last name and eagle), and good slashed drops. They are in excellent condition with virtually no tipwear evident. They are 8 7/8 inches long and weigh 4 ounces and 2+ pennyweights (Troy). More photos are available and can be emailed on request.

“Elias Davis of Newburyport, Massachusetts, remains an elusive figure, mentioned in only a few documents,” writes Patricia E. Kane in her monumental and definitive tome, “Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers.” Davis was born in Newburyport in 1746 and died there in 1783. Some references list his name as Edward Davis, or posit that there were two Newburyport silversmiths named Davis, but Kane thinks this is an error. "However, it is suggested here that they are one and the same m ...click for details

$100 SOLD

Nice upturned midrib or Hanoverian teaspoon which I thought was by Daniel Henchman of Boston but after a bit of research think might be by David Hall of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The key point seems to be the letter spacing. In any event, it is 4 9/16 inches long with a shallow rib, a bit of tipwear and a shell with some wear. It has a block monogram H • T. SOLD

Very nice teaspoon with short front rib, webbed shell and good period block monogram "S W" on back. The mark is "D" in "Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers" by Patricia E. Kane. Incidentally, Kane lists other spoons by Boyer with this same monogram. The spoon is in excellent overall condition with virtually no tip wear and only minor wear to shell. It measures 4 9/16 inches.

$200 SOLD

Fine pair of coin silver teaspoons by Edward Lang (1742-1830) of Salem, Massachusetts, who worked as a silversmith from 1768 to 1793 when he became a schoolmaster. These spoons have a downturned spatulate handle with tipt back. This form and the block monogram would indicate a date about 1780. There is a nice rounded drop and a nine-lobed shell in particularly good condition. The mark, also, is very crisp and clear (mark 'a" on page 264 of Marks of American Silversmiths in the Ineson-Bi ...click for details
