It has a strong knop which enhances its appearance; it is carefully finished with etched lines on the base and shaft. You might also note how nicely the maker has finished the underside of the base, even including etched lines there. There is an ejector hole to help remove the burnt down stubs...

Sterling silver soup ladle by the most famous woman silversmith of all time -- Hester Bateman. It has a period script monogram (we think it is a "T") and measures 12 1/8 inches long. There are some minor bruises on one side of the bowl; this really does not detract from the piece but is mentioned just for completeness of description. More photos are available and can be emailed on request.

Pair of cast square-based brass English candlesticks of classical style dating from the George III era, circa 1780. They make a nice presentation at their height of 10½ inches. The also retain their original bobeches whose gardrooned decoration happily echoes the gardrooning on the bases. These were cast in two parts; we have a photo of the top without the bobeche showing the seam lines at the corners...

Chambolle-Musigny wine case stencil, 2 7/8 inches by 9 5/8 inches. This stencil, used for marking cases of French wine, is a genuine 19th century metal stencil from a collection purchased in France. It has a wonderful oxidized patina which is so dense that it is hard to tell what metal was used, but a few scratches seem to show copper or brass underneath...

Rare antique glass from a French bar used to serve absinthe. This style is known as an East glass because it was supposedly used in the East of France, in areas around Lyon. This is a heavy, hand-blown glass with a polished pontil. It has a dose mark marking the level to which it was filled with absinthe. Water was added to the liquor, making a cloudy drink. I personally like the glasses with dose marks because you can be sure they were used for a drink like absinthe to which water was added...

We just got this great octagonal bistrot or absinthe saucer in France. It has a wonderful, bold price of 1.50 francs, a raised star (rare) in the center, and a silvered border which is somewhat worn. There is a small silver circle, also worn, in the center, making this a very elegant and high-end saucer. The saucer has a Limoges mark as well as the mark of J. Laplaine, Ste Livrade sur Lot, possibly the wholesaler...
