Rare 19th Century French Stencil Used to Mark Wine Case
$65 SOLD - Others available — contact us
Chambolle-Musigny wine case stencil, 2 7/8 inches by 9 5/8 inches.
This stencil, used for marking cases of French wine, is a genuine 19th century metal stencil from a collection purchased in France. It has a wonderful oxidized patina which is so dense that it is hard to tell what metal was used, but a few scratches seem to show copper or brass underneath. Most of the stencils were hung on a board; they have two small holes at the top which we have used to attach a string or chain so they can be hung on a wall. They also would look good framed or on a shelf. The stencils were used extensively so there are areas of damage, mostly around the edges (which can be seen in the photograph). These are rare collectors’ items for someone interested in wine and they make great decorations for a kitchen, bar or study.
