Handsome Malachite Base Mordan Postal Scales, c. 1880
Fine late Victorian English brass postal scale with malachite base by the renowned firm of Sampson Mordan & Co. These are particularly handsome because of the malachite which sits atop a larger piece of black marble. Looks great on a desk. Mordan was known, among other things, for making micromosaics and other items from colorful marbles. Ordinary Mordan postal scales are fairly common but the marble inlay ones are scarce. This scale is based on the ingenious Roberval principle which uses upper and lower crossbeams allowing the trays to stay horizontal as they move up and down. It is signed “S. Mordan & Co.” and “London” on the upper balance bar. The base is 9 3/4 inches long and 4 5/8 inches deep. It is quite heavy because of the marble base. Priority Mail shipping within the USA will be $15 on this item plus $12 for insurance, which is strongly advised.
