Back in the 1930's when smoking was 'sophisticated', this was no doubt intended to be a cigarette box. 70 years later, it's just a fabulous art deco box for anything you want to keep in it. It's made of heavy tin that's lithographed to look like burl wood. The box is lined in more tin. This tin isn't the cheap flimsy kind but well-made with reinforced rounded edges. Box measures 4 3/4 by 3 3/8 inches by 2 inches high. Box appears to be unused. There's a small ding at hinge edge but overall condition is excellent.
