This original circa late 1880's medal is from the Woman's Relief Corps, a post Civil War group who worked through local chapters to relieve the sufferings of disabled veterans, war widows, and orphans. In the North it functioned as an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic. These groups helped with cemetery maintenance and the erection of war memorials. We have a Memorial Day-Decoration Day holiday thanks to their efforts. Their era of greatest activity was in the 1880s and 1890s...when this badge is from. This patriotic organization badge is a Maltese Cross of copper bronze, with the Grand Army Badge Medallion center which includes five figures... Ms. Liberty, a Soldier, a Boy, a Woman, a Child, and the American Flag...all encircled in a wreath of stars. These represent the organization's motto which is...Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty. Badge measures 1 1/4 inches each way and has a loop for hanging. Some verdigris age tarnish will polish up but original patina is excellent.
