An Art Nouveau niello egg of large proportion mounted as an oil lamp with decorative metalwork and resting on a rouge marble base - later electrified. The surface of the egg decorated with alternating fleur de lis in silver tone and stylized cross ornaments in gold tone (presumed to be so but very thinly applied) smooth against the black patinated alloy surface. Judging from the similar metalwork of the handles and lamp mountings, the niello egg appears likely intended for the purpose - there also being brass elements dividing the egg in top, mid and bottom section. The top and bottom sections with a further band of gold and silver tone ivy vine decoration after the brass dividing element. It must be Continental and likely French given the rouge marble base and fleur de lis decoration. But the egg form together with the French style might suggest Russian taste. A copper bulb fixture later added atop the decorative brass. It really should be rewired before using. Otherwise good condition with some minor surface distress not in the least distracting from the presentation of this unusual object - most fitting for the interiors of collectors of French or Russian decorative arts. A shade would easily obscure the more noticeable distress on the top section. Someone good with metal finishes could no doubt safely clean the egg and enhance the patination. Total height including the rouge marble vase to top of bulb fixture is 17 3/16 inches (43.66cm). To top of original Art Nouveau brass element is 13 inches (33cm). To top of egg is 9 3/4 inches (24.76cm). The egg alone - some may like to know - is about 7 3/4 inches high (19.68cm)
