A large, 9 inch diameter, blue and white Hirado plate with the familiar decoration of karako at play in garden among rockery beneath pine trees. Karako are depicted on ceramic works in odd rather than even quantities - a group of nine (as seen on this large plate) encountered less commonly. Good condition with minor wear inside the dish. Diameter, 9 inches (22.86 cm)

A very nicely carved okimono type netsuke group depicting Hotei with Karako signed Masayoshi. En suite with a first quality Tobako-ire (tobacco pouch) with abstract Ho-no-Tori (phoenix) among flowers decoration stitched in muted tones silk thread to the hide wallet. The netsuke attached to a metal chain cord with fine mixed metal ojime slip with decoration of dragon in active sea. The chain then attached to the wallet with 2.5 inch long fine silver clasp with repousse decoration of peonies (uncertain if it is a slight tarnish or a shibuichi patination on the clasp - perhaps shibuichi as not tarnishing too darkly and maintaining a lustrous surface.) Decoration on the inside lining of the wallet appears may include a Christian cross (if we are not over interpreting.) Condition is good save a .238 cm shallow chip on one of the Karako (not an unusual or problematic point of condition and easily smoothed by a qualified conservator. A slight, old line from one of the himatoshi of similar size and also not unusual for an old ivory netsuke. The wallet in pristine, apparently unused condition. Netsuke length 1 7/8 inches (4.762 cm). Tobako-ire length 5 1/4 inches (13.335 cm). Shipping of this object is not an issue within the continental United States. Any prospective buyer outside the United States must be willing to accept any delay while an export permit is applied for at buyer's expense. International buyer's would need settle this purchase by wire transfer, including estimated shipping costs, and are responsible for any requirements on their end regarding the import of antique ivory and must accept all risks relating to such import.

An unusual and interesting polychrome enameled studio porcelain mug signed by the Japanese artist - Fukako Sei. Decoration borrows from traditional Nabeshima and Kakiemon iro-e examples with blue underglaze partial decoration filled in with red, yellow-green, turquoise and magenta enamel depicting prunus and peonies (Spring flora.) The mug with a slight taper toward the rim and a loop handle. I am, being both a coffee drinker and a ceramics collector, tempted to keep this. Perhaps it will find an even more determined owner. Good condition. Height 3 1/4 inches.

Spoils of Time
$495.00
A Chinese turquoise glazed porcelaneous stoneware meiping form vase. In the Ming/Yuan Cizhou style albeit less freely decorated and the more consistently applied glaze color more typical of examples we have seen in credible auctions offered as Qing (not earlier than Kangxi [see such an example with missing rim in Christies, sale 3515, lot 557] though we believe our example to be later and possibly Republican.) A "Ming" example with the same form and the same decoration but restored rim was sold at Halls, Welsh Bridge, lot 24, 16 November 2011 and referred to another "very similar vase" in "Harrison-Hall, 2001, page 439 plate 14:9" and another similar example in "He Li 'Chinese Ceramics, the New Standard Guide', 1996, page 238 plate 480". The presently offered vase was drilled for mounting as a lamp and presumably hand marked "France" in red at the time of that modification - when Chinese turquoise glazed wares, among other Chinese monochrome ceramics, were enjoying great popularity in France. Good condition save for the drilled base. We should mention that while researching this vase, illustrated examples appeared bluer than our vase. But upon photographing in studio lighting conditions, our photographs also appeared more blue than the vase which actually retains slightly more green from the turquoise spectrum (as other examples probably also do when viewed in person.) Height: about 10 3/4 inches (27.3 cm)

A Japanese Meiji era soft metal (kinko) pipe (kiseru) in patterned silk liner and stag horn sheath en suite with a shaped wood tobacco box (tonkotsu) of natural finish accentuating the natural figure and rings in the wood specimen. The pipe with chiseled decoration of a tiger on the mouthpiece and Mt Fuji on the bowl end - silver accenting sparse details. The two parts joined by an ink decorated hollowed bamboo. These metal parts may once have enjoyed a patination such as shakudo which has since been over cleaned but restorable in expert hands. The staghorn sheath with a tarnished, low grade shaped silver ferrule with accessory ring. Pipe length 7 7/8 inches. Sheath length (closed while holding pipe) length 9 inches. The tobacco box height 2 5/8 inches. All good condition save the over cleaned pipe and natural, subtle checking to the staghorn sheath.
