Buckingham follows in a family of Gorham designs that include the flagship Chantilly, and also patterns like Cromwell and Lenox. They all build upon a scroll motif, and tend to be understated and elegant. Buckingham is the last of these, having been issued in 1910. This example is a long-handled salad serving fork. It is very large-scaled, at 10 3/8" long and weighing 4.2 T. oz. It has decorated shoulders (found only on early pieces) on the pierced, three tine serving area, all of whic ...click for details

The dates for the maker of this piece, Newark, New Jersey's Lebkuecher & Co. range narrowly on either side of 1900, although the principals had long involvement with the silver industry as a whole. Often associated with the arts & crafts movement, the style of these petit four or pastry tongs, identified as item 2340, goes in that direction. They are 5" long overall, with a pair of 1 1/2" by 2" serving grips. These are reticulated and engraved in a pattern that matc ...click for details

Dating from 1894, King George was the fourth, and last in the evolutionary series of this classic English design that Gorham produced. The scale on this follows after its namesake pattern. It is 7 7/8" long, large by American standards, and exceptionally heavy weight at 2.5 T. oz. Gorham probably wanted to assure that this line could go toe to toe with Tiffany's popular English King of the same period, and indeed it does, in both design and sense of presentation. Tiffany produced asparagus servers with a variety of tines. This version is identified in Hood's book "Tiffany Silver Flatware" as "crossed tine" (page 100, figure 127). Indeed, this very example in "Grape" (within the Vine series) is illustrated. This form is particular to Tiffany. It is also frequently reproduced, often by clumsy casting methods. This example is original and fully authentic. The marks are precise and clear, and include an "M," ...click for details

The coffin end style which is characterized by angled shoulders on the tip of the handle is a decidedly American style. This 5 3/8" long sterling silver made by Solomon Hougham in 1804, within the coffin end period, in London is in this manner, so the Atlantic was no barrier to a common design motif. This is quite appealing, with a very slight tipt end on the reverse, and beveled shoulders. It has a thumb drop on the heel of the well-shaped bowl. There is no monogram or removal. This sterling silver child's cup has singular charm. It stands 2 3/4" high to the lip, has a top opening of 2 3/8" and weighs just over 2.3 T. oz. It has a footed, flat-bottomed base, and a bordered top rim with bead detailing. The unusual feature of the piece is its wire handle that is formed into a slip knot. As well as having design appeal, this element would offer a clever lesson to a growing mind that might wonder just how that knot was formed. The item carries the Simpso ...click for details

Whether this pattern was ever given a name, the obvious identifier on it is the cluster of tulips set midway on the handle, and it therefore frequently called "Tulip." The maker is Krider and Biddle of Philadelphia, whose "KB" mark appears on the reverse, along with "925." It dates from c. 1865. This example is a 4 3/4" long coffee spoon with a gold washed bowl. There is an Old English "h" monogram. The piece is in flawless condition.

Open salts were a staple on any Victorian table. They were produced in a variety of materials, including glass, ceramic, and as the case with this pair, in silver. No company generated more examples of this form than Gorham. Indeed, the Tompkins book on this subject documents a full century of Gorham's production. According to Tompkins, this set, item number 2480, dates to 1890. These possess a commanding look. They are large, 4 1/2" long, 1 3/4" tall, and weighty, 3.9 T. oz. ...click for details

Wood & Hughes 1870's Viola is an embellished Gothic design. It strikes a good balance between having a clean, uncluttered look, yet incorporating enough detail to draw the eye into what is there. This example is a 7 3/4" long preserve or jelly spoon. The bowl is plum-shaped with a central rib and scalloped edges. The interior is finished in a bronze-colored matte gold and engraved in a stylized leaf and grass motif that is vaguely Egyptian Revival in manner. It is well-companio ...click for details
