This mug made by Gorham about 1900 combines two style features.

First, it falls within the Art Nouveau style popular during the period. This is expressed in the overall undulating form, and in the sinuous character of the detailing, for example the organic nature of the handle and the stem and leaf elements that are applied to the body...

This pattern is identified in the Gorham archives (housed at Brown University and cataloged by scholar Sam Hough) as "Old English." It is commonly referred to, however, as "Seal Top" after the round, flat disk that surmounts the end of the faceted shank, which in turn follows after a traditional "old English" form.

Almost never marked, it frequently goes unrecognized for what it is, namely coin silver produced by the above maker...

A full-size soup ladle, this piece measures 13" long and weighs a massive 7.7 T. oz. The generously-proportioned bowl reinforces the overall sense of scale, at 4" in diameter and 1" at the deepest.

The pattern is Towle's courtly "Georgian." It resembles a Corinthian style column surmounted by a basket of roses and draped with a garland of roses. A third rose detail is set midway up the handle...

While a known Tiffany pattern, "Daisy" stands apart because it was not offered in a full line and information about its history and origins is scarce.

This example is an large, 9 5/8" long, 3.1 T. oz., serving spoon. It has a large scoop bowl with rolled, flanged shoulders and a broad, rounded end. The reverse of the bowl has a matte finish while the obverse has a bright finish.

It could have been for crackers, salad, berries, or some other unidentified purpose...

Tiffany's "Vine" is a multi-motif pattern that incorporates numerous vegetables, fruits, and flowers that grow on vines.

This example is a 6 1/4" long, 1.5 T. oz. sugar sifter with a "Gourd" portraiture.

It has a nine-lobed, 2 1/2" diameter, 1/2" deep, pierced bowl that is finished in a gold wash on both front and back sides.

It is without a monogram or removal and in superb condition. Pattern detail remains clear and well-defined. The bowl is free of dents, burrs, or nicks...

The design on these two, matched spoons is commonly referred as Lily, Lily of the Valley, and Number 88 (which usually appears on the backside of this 1870 design).

They are 7 1/8" long, weighty, and have the same "MHO" period monogram on the reverses. The pattern is intricate and has open work on the top of the handle. It seems to reflect similar design inspiration as Gorham's Egyptian Revival "Lotus" of the same period...

A known but unnamed pattern by Durgin, this design is French Rococo in manner. It is highly detailed, featuring scrolls, acanthus leaves, florettes, and beading arranged asymmetrically on the handle. The pattern repeats with slight variation on the backside.

This example is a 9 1/4" long, 3.8 T. oz., asparagus server. The shoulders of the serving end follow after the overall design with an added floral swag with bow. The crossbars joining the five tines are leafy scrolls...

Each of these twelve, circa 1865, spoons measures 5 11/16" long, while the group weighs 6.2 T. oz.

Appearing to be teaspoons, they exhibit a delicacy that suggests they might have been intended for ice cream.

Marked "Bailey & Co." and with that firm's "lion, S, shield" hallmark denoting sterling. There is a second, larger lion guardant imprint, which Catherine Hollan in her recent work "Philadelphia Silversmiths," identifies as George Sharp's, who was a major supplier to Bailey...

This 11 1/2" long, just under 4.2 T. oz., soup ladle incorporates several particularly appealing elements favored in mid 19th century American silver originating in sophisticated urban centers. In that regard, while marked only "Coin," the style of this piece rather conclusively suggests a Philadelphia source such as James Watts or one of his contemporaries.

It has a robust, twisted shank with a broad, scalloped edge, terminal. This is artfully engraved and bright cut in a period design th...

Innovative and exceptionally imaginative, and born of the Aesthetic movement, Tiffany's "Lap-Over-Edge" is so diverse in its motifs as to appear to offer limitless portraiture in its acid etched versions.

This example, a 7 1/4", heavy at 2.0 T. oz., place aka regular, fork portrays what appear to be eggplants on the vine. The backside is monogrammed "JO'B."

There are two specifics about this that set it apart. William P. Hood in "Tiffany Silver Flatware" notes that there were four bowl...

Whiting's and Gorham's Lotus are nearly twin patterns, although there are subtle differences. The primary distinguishing feature is the number of lotus fronds in the design, Gorham having three and Whiting, as with this piece, having five.

They are both products of the c. 1870 Egyptian Revival movement and are patterns that have never lost appeal.

This example is a 10 1/8" long, 2.0 T. oz., ice cream server.

It is in immaculate condition, showing essentially no wear, and is without ...

One of at least three, kindred, hollow handled patterns that Gorham produced in a limited number of serving pieces, this design is unnamed. A similar square or diamond design goes by the name "Hindoo."

This 9 1/2" long, just over 3.0 T. oz., pie server is a show piece. It is all sterling silver, with as mentioned, a flattened oval shaped, hollow handle. This is joined to a narrow, solid shank, while the large blade is thick and has sculpted shoulders that have a double banded reinforcing ...

The naturalistic "Ivy" motif of this c. 1875, 7 7/8" long, approximately 1.2 T. oz., cream or sauce ladle is to be distinguished from Whiting's line pattern of the same name.

The latter was a die struck design originated by Henry Hebbard, while this is a labor intensive, built up, piece made from cast leaves joined to a wire stem that in turn is wrapped with smaller wires made to resemble tendrils. The entire shank and leaves have a matte gold finish.

It is model number "39" according t...

Marked "Sterling," these eight forks retailed by Boston's Crosby & Morse (1864-69) are transition pieces between the coin and sterling silver standards. Each one measures 7 3/16" long, while the group weighs 11.6 T. oz.

They have plain handles with rounded and upturned ends. The lower sections are engraved in a period design with a central palmette motif, while the ends have script "EL" monograms. The backsides are unadorned.

Produced by Gorham in 1891 according to the date emblem stamped on the interior, this tobacco box (sometimes identified as snuff) was a promotional item offered with the "Compliments of John Anderson & Co."

A history of this New York City firm can readily be found on the internet. See image two for a facsimile of an 1859 newspaper ad for this company. The print notes a proprietary brand "Solace," and indeed that word appears appears on the lid of this item in stylized, raised, lettering. ...

Dating from 1885, Gorham's "Old Masters" scarcely has any parallels in the realm of American sterling silver flatware. Each piece in the line, with some duplication, features a different, renowned figure from the realm of the classical arts. The handles are cast and individually designed with all aspects of the shank complimentary of the bust of whatever figure surmounts the end of that handle.

Seldom found, John Wendt's "Moresque" is the nameplate pattern for the "Persian Revival," or "Moorish," style that was popular in the United States in the 1870's. Some other contemporaneous examples of this motif include Tiffany's and Whiting's "Persian," and Gorham's "Hindostanee."

"Moresque" examples present with slight variations from piece to piece. These variations include the utilization of a plain disc on the handle, set on the front or backside, or on both sides, as is the case wit...
