Measuring 8 7/8" long and weighing 2.0 T. oz., this berry or serving spoon was made by Gorham and stamped with that company's lion, anchor, G symbol. Other marks include Patent 1871 and Sterling.

The pattern is Corinthian. Apropos of the name, it has a fan or leaf design element akin to Gorham's Grecian patented in 1861, but overall is Moorish in feel. It is double die struck, meaning the design appears on both sides of the handle...

Whiting's and Gorham's Lotus are nearly twin patterns, although there are subtle differences. The primary distinguishing feature is the number of lotus fronds in the design, Gorham having three and Whiting, as with this piece, having five.

They are both products of the c. 1870 Egyptian Revival movement and are patterns that have never lost appeal.

This example is a 10 1/8" long, 2.0 T. oz., ice cream server...

Set with box.
The design on these two, matched spoons is commonly referred as Lily, Lily of the Valley, and Number 88 (which usually appears on the backside of this 1870 design).

They are 7 1/8" long, weighty, and have the same "MHO" period monogram on the reverses. The pattern is intricate and has open work on the top of the handle. It seems to reflect similar design inspiration as Gorham's Egyptian Revival "Lotus" of the same period...

This item is an old, 1888 version, of Gorham Versailles marked lion, anchor, G, Sterling, and Copyrighted. It is also engraved "Norris. 1891" in script on the reverse, so its age is validated in multiple ways. The piece is a 9 1/8" long, heavy, 3.5 T. oz., large berry spoon. It is a very fine example, having excellent pattern detail that shows minimal polishing wear. The bowl is shell form and flawless, and retains its original pale champagne gold, matte finish.

What design elements prompted Gorham to adopt the name "Colonial" for this 1885 design is something of a mystery because it does not follow after any conventional colonial motif.

The main feature of the pattern is striping that runs up about two-thirds of the handle. This is more subtle than it appears, as the surface alternates between convex and concave and suggests banding, perhaps of a naturalistic material such as bamboo...

Stamped with the Gorham lion, anchor, G, "Pat. 71," and "Sterling," this 5 5/8" long, 1.0 T. oz., cream ladle is a fine period piece.

The pattern is "Corinthian," which falls generally in a Moresque style with, as implied by the name, a nod toward classical Greek design.

The piece is a form commonly referred to as a "bucket ladle." The term derives from the shape of the bowl which is this case is 7/8" deep and 1 1/2" across at the top...

A known but unnamed pattern by Durgin, this design is French Rococo in manner. It is highly detailed, featuring scrolls, acanthus leaves, florettes, and beading arranged asymmetrically on the handle. The pattern repeats with slight variation on the backside.

This example is a 9 1/4" long, 3.8 T. oz., asparagus server. The shoulders of the serving end follow after the overall design with an added floral swag with bow. The crossbars joining the five tines are leafy scrolls...

Wendell's late 19th century "Ariel" features a cherubic-looking figure set against a dense, decorative background. It is highly reminiscent of Dominick & Haff's "Labors of Cupid," which it predates by five years, 1895 vs. 1900.

This example is a 6 1/4" long, heavy, 1.7 T. oz. sauce ladle. The 1 3/4" diameter, 5/8" deep, bowl has flanged shoulders and a scalloped and patterned outer border.

This is in immaculate condition and without a monogram or removal...

Marked only "Sterling," this c. 1860's pattern is a Whiting design commonly identified as "Calla Lily," taken from the three dimensional flower that adorns the end of the handle.

This example is a large, 10 1/2" long, just under 2.6 T. oz., serving spoon. It has a wide and deep bowl (there is an otherwise identical spoon with a narrower bowl) resulting in a particularly generous capacity.

Described by one source as "jewelry-esque," this is assembled from a variety of parts, rather than ...

A 19th form, this cake knife aka cake saw (taken from the sawtooth top edge of the blade), is 9 3/8" long and weighs 2.4 T. oz. It is flat handled and solid silver. The pattern is "Domestic," by Gorham, dating from 1881. It features intricate ivy detailing, with a small bee and dragonfly beside a central rosette, and a fan end. It is a pastoral and charming design, and touches upon the aesthetic mode with the insect figures. The blade has a matte finish and bright cut engraving that reitera...

Priced as a set.
Marked with both Philadelphia's George Sharp's "double lion and S" and "Patent" marks as well as "Tiffany & Co.," this salad serving fork and spoon have a double provenance that bespeaks the finest of mid 19th century silver manufacturing and retailing. Curiously, they are not stamped "Sterling," which standard Tiffany typically required in the 1860's from which they date, so they are possibly coin silver rather than sterling.

They are exceptionally large items, with the fork measuring 10 3...

Durgin's "Marechal Niel" offers a high relief, multi-dimensional portraiture of the rose which is its namesake. It is double die struck, meaning the design appears on both the front and back sides of the handle.

This group of eight matching, 5 13/16" long, just over 6.9 T. oz. the lot, teaspoons are without monograms or removals and are in immaculate condition, showing no wear whatsoever. They have well-shaped bowls free of dings, dents, or scratches and the overall finishes are brilliant. ...

Dating from 1861, "Beaded" is one of Gorham's earliest line patterns and was produced for a considerable period of time. As such, it was made in both coin and sterling silver. This example is the latter.

It is an exceptionally large, 12" long, and heavy, nearly 4.5 T. oz., fish slice. At this scale, the shank is thick and the beading high relief and tactile.

The blade is elegantly shaped, with a gently curved lower edge, scalloping on the upper end and shoulder, a notched lower corner...

Gorham's "Medallion" was the pattern of choice offered by mid 1860's Tiffany & Co. when it was simply a retailer and not a manufacturer.

This 5 7/8" long, .8 T. oz., ice cream spoon is an example of this partnership. It is stamped lion, anchor, G for Gorham, "Pat. 1864," "Tiffany & Co.," and "Sterling" on the plain backside.

The figure is a youthful helmeted male warrior. The blunt end bowl has a ribbed interior and notched and slightly flanged shoulders. The bowl evidences scant trac...

Originally made in twelve different images as a part of a set, Gorham's number 18 coffee spoons appear in that company's 1892 catalog (see image 3). This group encompasses eight of those original designs.

All of them are marked lion, anchor, G, "18," and "Sterling." Each spoon measures 4 1/4" long, while the eight together weigh 2.6 T. oz. The bowls all have matching shell and scroll interior surfaces.

The imagery on the cast (rather than die struck) handles varies. Two are figural, ...

While unnamed, this c. 1870 design by George Sharp is quite similar to Gorham's "Louis XIV" and Knowles' "Emperor," both of the same period. It is double die struck, meaning the pattern appears on both sides of the piece. This example is a 6 1/2" long, 1.2 T. oz. sauce ladle. The handle is slender and elongated looking, and is joined to a 2" diameter, round shell bowl with a scalloped rim and a flat bottom. This is finished on both sides with a bright gold wash that extends up to the lower o...

Dating from 1880, Whiting's "Persian" is a Moresque design deriving from the same sensibilities that generated Tiffany's pattern of the same name, as well as Whiting's own "Arabesque" and Gorham's "Hindostanee" among others. This example is a 7 1/2" long, 1.5 T. oz., preserve or jelly spoon. It has the plum-shaped bowl with flanged rim and central rib that Whiting used across several lines of the period. Persian has a reserve area at the front of the handle which is a natural location for an ...
