This 8" tall vase is formed from a sterling silver base that is 4" wide, and a turquoise blue glass body that has a top diameter of 3 5/8", and a maximum width of 6". Overall it is the shape of a large brandy snifter or a rose bowl. The silver is stamped Alvin, Cement Filled Reinforced, S 274; there are no identifiers on the glass. This late 19th century design is described by Richard Osterberg in his "Silver Hollowware for Dining Elegance" as "most unusual." He illustrates a claret jug (figure 8.5, page 142) that matches this creamer and sugar. Each piece of this set has a sterling top and base that encases a crystal body.
