This silver-plated hat pin is 7 7/8" long. It was made by Gorham and dates circa 1880. It has a large, loop end that is twisted around the stem, resembling a knot or tendril on a clinging plant. Gorham's early silver-plate was a well-regarded product. In this instance, the stronger underlying metal served to strengthen a piece otherwise subject to bending. The condition is mint. Parks Bros. & Rogers garnered a large portion of its production line from Howard Silver Co., both firms from Providence, RI, and that is the likely case with this 2 1/2" wide bar pin. It features two Homeric medallion male figures set on irregular disks. Dating from the 1890's, this is very much after a style originated by George Shiebler in the 1880's. The condition is excellent.
