Among the somewhat whimsical themes that were brought into the realm of silver design starting in the late 1800's was that of playing cards. Kings, queens, jacks or knaves, for example, became subjects of imposing pieces on their own. This 5 1/4" long, 1.0 T. oz., bonbon or nut spoon is in that vein. The end of the handle portrays a cast, fully articulated hand holding five visible cards, with additional cards stacked under the left hand one. Fessenden's Tulip is an impressive entry in the field of Art Nouveau floral designs. Introduced in 1910, it was late in that style period, but fully retains the spirit of the movement. The design is high relief and undulating. It completely embodies the languorous quality of Art Nouveau, with the tulip blossom drifting listlessly to one side as if nudged by a summer's breeze. A secondary image appears on the backside of the handle and is as fully engaging as the front. This item is ...click for details
