Gorham's Olive was its own variant of an otherwise standard pattern. It was double die struck, meaning the design appears on both the front and backsides, and produced beginning in 1865. These ten matching teaspoons are early examples, still to a coin silver standard, thus pre-1868, and marked with a lion, anchor, G and "Gorham & Co." They are 5 7/8" long, and somewhat hefty, with the group weighing 8.2 T. oz. Each piece is engraved "Arnold," which is probabl ...click for details

Marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, 140, and the name of the retailer, Portland, Maine's Lowell & Senter. Although itself not date coded, it is engraved "Dec. 15, 1867" and "SIG," so the 1867 inscription indicates this was produced just before Gorham went to a sterli ...click for details

This example of Gorham's Rouen is a "first edition" of this 1892 pattern, as validated by the "Pat. Apl'd. For," stamp on the reverse. Other marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, Sterling, and the letter T, which is a weight designation for "trade." Rouen is an elaborate rococo design that incorporates acanthus leaf, shell and floral elements interpreted in a French manner. This piece is a 7" long, substantial weight, dessert or oval soup spoon. The New Jersey Historical Society identifies Benjamin Cleveland, whose working years straddled the 18th and 19th centuries, as Newark's first silversmith. He is well regarded, both for that reason and foremost for the quality of his work. This pair of matching, coin silver master salt spoons are distinctive. They are large, 4 3/8" long, and in that regard are in the manner of English mustard spoons (and there is the possibility they are that). They have pointed antique ends, with el ...click for details

This coin silver pie server is a lengthy 9" overall, with a blade that is 4 3/8" by 2 3/4" at the widest. The pattern is without a certain name, although it is identified as "Spray" by Tere Hagen. Her dating and manufacturer attribution, however, are both in error, so whether she is one for three, or zero for three on this is up to question. The certainty on this design is that it is one of Durgin's earliest, with examples of this found in both coin and sterling s ...click for details

This sterling silver pie server is very large. It is a full 10" long and weighs a robust 3.1 T. oz. The blade is triangular, 4 1/8" long by 2 3/4" at the widest. It is heavily engraved in a leaf and shell design, with a central pheasant or peacock set amid grasses. The pattern is a Tuscan variant. There is an "AV" monogram which is decidedly art nouveau in style, and was probably applied some 40-50 years after it was made (circa 1865). While marked Sterling, the se ...click for details
