One of the quiet delights of early coin silver is that it sometimes speaks an elegantly simple language. That is the case with these six, matched teaspoons marked "Carson & Hall," for the Albany, New York partnership with dates 1814-19. They are somewhat singular in size and style. Four of them are 5 7/8" long, one 6", and one 6 1/8", which is simply natural variation deriving from these being hand made. The immediate presumption is that the maker of this piece was Ebenezar Phelps of Northampton, Massachusetts, based on the "Phelps" stamped on the reverse. The early 19th century style would correspond with that attribution as well, given Ebenezar's dates were 1766 until at least 1830. However, there is a second imprint which is a multi-point star.
