John Wendt was a prominent mid 19th century silversmith. His name evokes a host of associations in the burgeoning world of commerce and the carriage trade as it existed in New York City at the time. Thus so strongly identified with this one locale, Wendt actually first established himself in Boston, and that period of his working years often goes overlooked. While in Boston, he quickly emerged as a skilled and exceptionally able craftsman, and eventually linked with Ball, Black & Company, ...click for details

This coin silver mug has a double provenance. It bears a punch mark of "E&P" for Eoff and Phyfe of New York City. It is also stamped Baldwin & Co. for the Newark, NJ manufacturing jeweler. The two firms both operated from the 1840's to mid 1850's, so the date of this piece is quite precise. They are a handsome matched pair, simply styled and with a crossed ribbon motif that repeats on the rim of the saucer, and lip and handle of the cup. The plate is 5 1/2" in diameter, sits on a 1 5/8" wide rimmed bas ...click for details
