Made in Connecticut by a division of International, Charter Oak takes it name from the design of the piece, and it references the tree that was legendary in that state's history. The interpretation is an an Art Nouveau style, consistent with the early 20th century date of the pattern. It remains a very popular design, and the reason for that is amply evident in such a fine example as this 7 3/8" long youth knife. This silver-plated hat pin is 7 7/8" long. It was made by Gorham and dates circa 1880. It has a large, loop end that is twisted around the stem, resembling a knot or tendril on a clinging plant. Gorham's early silver-plate was a well-regarded product. In this instance, the stronger underlying metal served to strengthen a piece otherwise subject to bending. The condition is mint.
