According to the 1885 Gorham catalog, Nuremberg consisted of some 150 or so figures intended to represent the peasant characters of "the country that was home to Albert Durer." The line incorporated cast figures set atop a tubular shank. This 6 1/8" long sugar spoon portrays a monk. Pieces tended to be light, and that is the case with this item. The bowl has flanged shoulders and is finished in a mostly intact original gold wash. It is in excellent condition and is stamped wi ...click for details

Fontainebleau has remained one of Gorham's most popular figural designs of the 1880's. As it is a highly detailed pattern and set in low relief, it is subject to loss of detail from polishing. Examples such as this 7 3/4" long, weighty, 1.4 T. oz., master butter knife wherein the detail remains so crisp are scarce. The reverse is monogrammed "McEwen" in script. The matte finish blade is finely engraved with wriggle work and a blossom with fern-like leaves. Marks are Gorha ...click for details

The large size, 5 1/8" long, version of Gorham's Florentine sugar tongs is quite robust, weighing 1.7 T. oz. The early 20th century design features a beaded figure that is suggestive of Renaissance imagery. The accompanying detail incorporates leaf and scroll elements and even in miniature, a small urn with fruit or flowers in it, and perhaps what is a lyre. The stylized grips on this are unusual in that they have a web-like design. There is an "ECM" monogram on the arch. ...click for details

This singular sterling silver fork, whose design sensibility is aesthetic, was made by Gorham, probably c. 1885. The central portion is a solid tube or wire with a 1 1/2" lower section that is twisted. There is a barrel-like cross piece that is the most substantial element of the whole piece. This may have served the practical function of hooking the item onto a caster stand. The end has a finial that is shaped somewhat like an acorn. The three tine serving end is rather diminutive. At 6 1/4" long, this knife is quite diminutive and may have been part of a youth or traveling set. It was made by George Unite in Birmingham, England in 1852, according to the readily legible stamps on the blade. While such mother-of-pearl handle knives characteristically have silver-plated blades, this one is solid sterling, as is the ferrule, or collar, where the handle and blade join. One side of the blade is inscribed "H.F.H." in script. It is a thoroughly engaging piece, ...click for details

The apparent inspiration for this 1901 design was France's 18th century renowned courtesan Madame Du Barry. The painter Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun made several portraits of her, and according to an online resource, Le Brun noted in her writings, "I made three portraits of Madame du Barry. . . . In the second she is dressed in white satin; she holds a wreath in one hand, and one of her arms is leaning on a pedestal." The dominant element in Durgin's Du Barry is the wreath, which ...click for details
