Frank Whiting produced a number of lesser known but innovative designs in the late 19th century, and "Esther" is one of them. Utilizing a scroll and leaf motif, the pattern has strong Aesthetic elements. It is asymmetrical and tends toward an abstracted, free form look in the bowl. The work is precisely rendered and quite subtle, with for example a stippled ground in the area behind the handle details. This sugar spoon measures 5 7/8" long and weighs .9 T. oz., although it fee ...click for details

Of all those designs, it may be the one with a look most likely to have gone toe-to-toe with Tiffany's Olympian of the same period. This 6" long, heavy, just over 1.0 T. oz., teaspoon features two draped female figures carrying baskets filled with flowers ...click for details

Hanau silver is a dense subject, but detailed information is readily accessible on the internet. The short of it is that it references Continental standard silver produced in an area of Germany. Hanau silver often has a characteristic look and idiosyncratic (pseudo) hallmarks, and these may be hard to identify. This 4 1/2" long, probably tea caddy, spoon, however, has markings that are fully documented as belonging to Gebruder Dingeldein. He began working in 1868. Biographical material ...click for details
