This c. 1900 5" long, 1.3+ T. oz., solid sterling silver shoe horn has a double provenance. It was made by the highly regarded silver and jewelry manufacturer, George Shiebler, and retailed by Tiffany & Co. whose name needs no footnote. Markings for both firms, plus the word Sterling and the number 5838 are stamped on the reverse. Characteristic of Shiebler, the design is imaginative and individualistic. The form of this item is illustrated in the 1896 Gorham catalog under toilet items, and is identified as a "bonnet brush." It is 6 1/4" by 3 1/2" overall, with a sterling handle that is 3 1/2" by 3 1/2". The markings are clear and include the lion, anchor, G, Sterling, model number "C159," and the date emblem for 1898.
