Produced little more than a century ago, c. 1900, this item is a novelty to the modern world. It is identified in period Gorham catalogs as a mucilage pot (see image 2 for a similar item from a 1902 catalog page). Even the old language is quaint, as today this would be called a paste or a glue jar, if it were recognized at all. It consists of a glass body that is 2 1/4" tall and has a 1 3/4" diameter base. Card cases were fashionable items in the 19th century, and this coin silver one made c. 1860 by Albert Coles of New York would have made a notable statement for its owner. It measures 3 3/8" by 2 3/8" by 1/8". Both sides of the piece are intricately engraved with ivy and lotus or palmetto leaf detailing, which are motifs that would have been especially popular at the time.
